I have done a guided relaxation with three very different groups of students. The results always amaze me. Google ‘meditation scripts.’ For so many students, stress is high. Learning to relax is vital to health and happiness. Stress is related to almost all illnesses. Let’s teach our students to breathe, deal with stress and anxiety, and respond calmly to problems. Meditation helps with sleep problems, ADD, restlessness, aggressive, panic attacks, etc. The list seems endless. Put it on your teaching to-try list.

Great idea! Kids live in a high stress world, with constant stimulation. I have done some meditation with my Girl Guides at those times that they are extremely energetic and it calms them down much better than an eight minute running game.
I never thought of bringing it into the classroom, but think that that would be so good for the students! Thanks for sharing!

You bet! A resource I use to get relaxation scripts is http://www.the-guided-meditation-site.com/guided-meditation-script.html … I edit the scripts quite a bit to suit the vocabulary of the classroom. Hope it works for you!

I also heard of a teacher that has done this with a girl whom has cerebral palsy and is constantly banging her hand into her mouth. While this girl was going through a guided meditation, to the amazement of the teachers, she was for the first time, completely still and at rest. Thank you for sharing.

My pre internship teacher was a firm beleiver in meditation. We did yoga in the classroom as well and I was amazed at how much the students enjoyed it. The students even knew if they were getting out of hand that they need to “calm down”. When the students would suggest this she would simply stop her lesson and begin to teach yoga. Once they were all calm and felt they could continue with the lesson she would begin again. I learnt alot from her teaching but one thing I will never forget is that sometimes you need to put your teaching on hold to make sure the students are prepared to learn. Without hesitation she would leave her lesson and return when it was better for the students.

Thanks for sharing this post! I have recently begun doing yoga and I have to agree that the meditation time makes my day go so much better. As you relax it’s like you can physically feel the stress leaving your body. I am so in love with the idea of using this in the classroom because it has never occurred to me before. Thanks Becca, for sharing about your classroom experience as well!
