We’re given a couple of answers in our education classes: differentiate, adapt, appreciate diversity. Yet, society does not. This is a huge cultural problem, perhaps a problem with humanity, but I do believe the change begins in the classroom. Let’s not ‘mold’ our students. Let’s give them the resources and the tools to ‘mold’ themselves. The students who don’t ‘fit,’ are the ones who change the world. The students who do not follow the rules (including sometimes the teachers rules) are the most powerful people. If their intentions are good; as teachers, we should be valuing what they have to say. Often, the students who are considered at risk, have more resilience and tenacity. We should foster these strengths.
